Why is Facebook making sounds? How to turn off in-app notifications

Websites like Facebook have a pesky habit of making sounds when you least expect it. Luckily there are ways to get rid of notifications, even if Facebook doesn’t make it obvious how to do it.

This is everything you need to know about silencing Facebook, for Android, iPhone, PC and Mac users.

Why does Facebook keep making noise?

In-app notifications, specifically, are sent when you are using Facebook or it is open in one of your browser’s tabs.

These show up over the bell icon in Facebook’s notification or over the Facebook app on your mobile. A banner might also come across your screen, accompanied by a loud noise.

However, there are ways, within the app or website’s settings, to make sure these are muted and even shut completely off.

Can you change the sound Facebook makes?

You cannot change the sound Facebook makes, but you can switch the sound off completely.

You can either prevent Facebook from notifying you at all, or simply mute the alerts, so you only get a visual reminder.

How to turn off Facebook notifications on your computer

First, you will need to log in to your Facebook and click on your profile picture in the top right of Facebook. Select Settings & privacy and then Settings.

Once you are in Settings, select Notifications on the left-hand side. If you still want to be reminded of in-app notifications of some Facebook events, then go through the various types of notifications to customise your alerts.

To prevent Facebook from making noise on your PC or Mac, you’ll need to scroll down to Where You Receive Notifications.

Under this section, you can stop Facebook from sending you push notifications altogether. If you still want the alerts, without them playing a sound, then deselect Play a sound when each new notification is received. You can also deselect Play a sound when a message is received.

How to turn off Facebook notifications on your iPhone and iOS devices

If you have an iPhone or iPad then there is a way to stop receiving Facebook notifications altogether.

Go to Settings>Notifications. Next, you will need to find the Facebook app under Notification Style. Once that is selected, you will need to turn off Allow Notifications.

Under this section in Settings, you can customise your notifications, if you do not want to turn them off completely – including preventing Facebook from alerting you with sounds and red badge icons that appear in the top-right corner of the app on your homescreen.

Shutting off notifications on your Android device

On your Android phone or tablet look for Apps or Application settings (the exact name might vary depending on your phone).

Scroll down to find the Facebook app for which you want to turn off notifications, and then tap on it.

Select App notifications or a similar option. Either toggle off all notifications or select the specific ones you’d like to turn off.
